Person-centred Handling and Assessment in Challenging Situations (PHACS) is a new assessment model for moving and handling people in complex situations, with a Human Rights Based Approach.
PHACS has been designed for people considered to display ‘challenging or unpredictable behaviour’, in what may be assumed as straightforward situations. This model is particularly suited to people with learning disabilities, mental health distress, dementia, and those with communications problems.
PHACS adopts a Person Centred Approach to moving and handling, where the person has a voice in their moving and handling plan. It also considers the physical, psychological, social, cultural and health and safety factors in the handling assessment. The PHACS Decision Support Tool assists the practitioner when considering possible handling solutions.
